For quite some time, India has been considered one of the world’s leading sources of high-quality granite, and the numbers certainly support that view. With vast reserves of exceptionally varied stone and a consistently strong growth in exports, the country has become a cornerstone of the global natural stone trade.
At YDL Stone, we work with trusted suppliers to bring Australian clients some of the finest Indian granites available. As part of our ongoing series exploring the origins of our natural stone surfaces, we take a closer look at India’s granite industry, its remarkable growth and why these natural granite slabs continue to be in high demand around the world.
India: A Global Leader in Granite
India has long been recognised for its rich geological heritage, particularly in granite and marble. The country holds some of the largest granite reserves on Earth, spread across key states including Rajasthan, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. These regions produce a wide array of colours and patterns that have helped India rise to become the world’s top exporter of granite.
A Little History
As with most major stone exporting countries, the vast export sector India is known for was predated by a vast historical domestic sector. More specifically, granite has been used in the art of temple building, which is a practice that is said to be as ancient as Hinduism itself.
To quote from Mangalam Vasan’s interview with Sthapati Purushothaman Jayaraman in his interview discussing the experience of working on the first granite shrine in the Southern Hemisphere:
“That it (referencing the grand Bṛhadeeswarar temple in Thanjavur) has withstood the onslaught of the invaders and the elements for a thousand years, is not only a testimony to the extraordinary Tamil King Raja Raja Cholan’s vision but also to the power of the granite stones used in the construction.”
The temple this interview is in reference to, Sri Vakrathunda Vinayagar Temple in The Basin, Melbourne, features the largest granite shrines in the Southern Hemisphere. Completed around 2020-2021, the renovation used hundreds of pieces of hand-carved, imported South Indian granite to transform the formerly concrete structure, with a 6.5-tonne single-stone dome. In other words, like the natural stones we are discussing, it too is a triumph made possible through imported Indian granite in Australia.

What began as a domestic industry has transformed into a major global player. Today, India’s granite exports form a vital part of its natural stone sector. In 2024, the Indian granite market generated USD 326.4 million in revenue and is projected to reach USD 569.3 million by 2033, growing at a CAGR of 6.4% from 2025 to 2033. This success stems from a combination of abundant resources, advanced processing capabilities and a focus on meeting international demand.
The Rise of Indian Granite Exports
Several factors have driven India’s success in the global stone market. The country benefits from modern quarrying and processing facilities that ensure high standards of quality and consistency. At the same time, competitive pricing makes Indian granite an attractive option for both large-scale commercial projects and residential homes.
Indian granite is well known worldwide for its affordability, quality, and durability. The industry, valued at around Rs. 25,000 crore with estimates reaching Rs. 35,000 (Approximate Value: A$ 5.2 Billion – A$ 5.3 Billion) to 40,000 (Approximate Value: A$ 5.9 Billion – A$ 6.1 Billion) crore in 2025-2026, sees granite exports ranking first in the world. While domestic demand is lower, export potential remains very strong.
Major markets include the United States (the largest and most valuable, accounting for nearly 16% of global imports by square meter volume), the United Kingdom, Germany, China, Japan, as well as growing demand in the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Africa.

What Makes Indian Granite So Desirable?
Indian granite stands out for its exceptional performance and visual appeal. Formed under intense geological conditions, these stones are dense and highly durable, offering good resistance to scratches, heat and everyday wear when properly cared for. With routine sealing, they perform beautifully in demanding applications such as kitchen benchtops, flooring and outdoor surfaces. This balance of strength and beauty makes them a practical and attractive choice for Australian homes.
Beyond strength, Indian granite offers remarkable variety, with over 160 shades available, from deep blacks and warm browns to crisp whites and striking speckled patterns. Modern finishing techniques, including polished and leathered surfaces, further enhance their natural beauty and practicality. Sustainability efforts within the industry, including improved resource management and responsible quarrying, also appeal to today’s environmentally conscious buyers.
